The development of next generation sequencing technology has undoubtedly impairs the classic microbiological approach even though main questions remain still elusive. To date, nobody can define the existence of a unique healthy microbial community, nor a diagnostic application can be definitely assessed. In this context, “snapshots” of the microbiota contribute to reveal factors associated with a disease, even though lacking longitudinal data and the association with results obtained from gold standard microbiological tests. Here we show how the information obtained by microbiota can be a promising additional tool to monitor urinary tract infections revaluating beneficial communities or attention to particularly microbial patterns.
